Late Hits

December 31, 2005

“Pitchfork and Lost Needles” is on iTMS (and, ostensibly, in stores; you still buy pieces of plastic? weird). It’s essential property for Clutch superfans (which is to say, “Me, Gary, and probably others”) but it’s not amazingly earth-shattering (with the exception of “Bottoms Up, Socrates”, which is a pretty killer track left off RH/E). It [...]

Merry Clutch-mas

December 27, 2005

Last night, three out of four of your Furious hosts (sorry, Doug) headed into the city with wives and girlfriends in tow to see Clutch and others at the 930 club. Here’s a thumbnail sketch of the bands.
Wooly Mammoth – Three-piece band, thick and booming as fuck. Gregg said their mix was fucked up because [...]

Top of the Year to Ya’

December 27, 2005

Another year of finding music that makes my blood boil has come to an end and I look forward to hearing more. I thought I’d not only mention my favorites of 2005, but also some of my favorites from the years past (sniff-sniff, eyes watering up)
Clutch (pick an album, any album)
Devil Driver
Jelvins
Soul Fly
As [...]

Doug’s Top 9ish of 2005

December 24, 2005

Although I’ve been quite the slack-bitch here on the fury, these are my favorites of 05… some I’ve mentioned, others I never got around to. Don’t hate me because I’m busy.
1. Devildriver: The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand (hands down)
2. Bullet For My Valentine: Hand of Blood
3. Clutch: Robot Hive/Exodus
4. Corrosion of Conformity: In The [...]

A brief treatise on the moral imperative of the metal singer

December 22, 2005

According to a supposedly dismissive quote from the NYT (via Wikipedia, FWIW) about Rammstein live,
“Mr. Lindemann gave off an air of such brute masculinity and barely contained violence that it seemed that he could have reached into the crowd, snatched up a fan, and bitten off his head.”
Dude, if you’re in a metal band and [...]

5 in 05

December 22, 2005

1. Clutch: Robot Hive/Exodus
Best. Album. Evar. Hands down. On the “desert island” list.
2. Devildriver: The Fury Of Our Maker’s Hand
Good stuff, a site favorite, and probably missed the desert island list by a narrow margin.
3. Richard Cheese: Aperitif for Destruction
“It’s not ‘dome’, it’s ‘do me’. ‘Do’. ‘Me’. 2 separate words.”
4. Propagandhi: Potemkin City Limits
Rebellion [...]

Gary’s Top 8 Albums of 2005

December 20, 2005

I couldn’t come up with ten CDs that I’d outright recommend. Deal with it and buy these albums if you don’t already own them… you slackass.
1. Devildriver : The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand
2. Clutch : Robot Hive/Exodus
3. Opeth : Ghost Reveries
4. Trivium : Ascendancy
5. Danko Jones : We Sweat Blood (2005 release in US)
6. [...]

Through the Eyes of the Dead: Bloodlust

December 20, 2005

Band website: http://www.throughtheeyesofthedead.com/
Through the Eyes of the Dead come off Prosthetic Records, and share the label with one of my recently-favorite metal bands: Lamb of God (my previous review of Ashes of the Wake).
This is not your typical new metal record, which is to say that this album is not metalcore. If I had to [...]

Also following up the “Rock Returns to 930 Club” post, Avenged Sevenfold [...]

Zao: The Funeral of God

December 6, 2005

Band website: http://www.zaoonline.com/
For the record—and according to the holier-than-thou asshole fans—the band’s name is pronounced such that it rhymes with “mayo”… as in Christ’s favorite egg-based condiment (mayonaisse) and/or Richard Gere’s character in “An Officer and a Gentleman”. It DOES NOT rhyme with “The Book of Tao” and/or Chairman Mao; nor does it rhyme with… [...]
